water in hell

excitement

last night was so good in general but before i went to bed i checked my email to find some very special news. i'm officially an intern for summer 2011 in nyc for one of my dream companies. i'm terrified and thrilled, just the right mixture of emotions. while i'm a bit nervous coming out and saying the company's name on here, i will give you hints above.

there has been a couple of reasons why i can't stop smiling lately but this certainly is another reason added to the list.

female

if you haven't noticed, i chronicle a lot of girl/style crushes on this blog. it's a celebration of all things pretty so of course i'm going to include women that i look up to. so in my 'world of girl crushes' (like you don't have one? plz.) crystal renn obviously reigns supreme. she has been a topic on this blog quite frequently.

last week when I was leaving an interview in manhattan, i headed towards topshop on broadway and ran into her smoking a cigarette in all black with the most perfect chanel 2.5 bag. she looked thin so let's quit calling her a plus size model. hopefully she's okay and would look better with another 10 lbs but who are we kidding? she's where fashion should be headed and is heading.

the alien-esque emaciated 14 year olds are a dime a dozen. the real women are steppin' out. it's apparent that although nothing is going to completely change, it's on it's way to changing a bit. it's even seen in a lot of designs, such as recent prada, gucci, and louis vuitton. hunched over, boney and weak looking models will come and go. they're doing their thing but it's not what women want to see. women (not to mention men) want to see other real women. and while crystal renn certainly isn't plus size anymore, everything about her (especially in these pictures) represents something I and many others want to see more in fashion. it's almost reminiscent of the early 90's era of 'the supermodel' with striking characters like cindy crawford, linda evangelista and christy turlington. the styling & hair in this shoot? come on.

my pal ryland made a little 2010 mix and sent it to me. it rules. i've been addicted to two songs from it. one of them being this big boi song. i've listened to it wayyy toooo muchhhh during the past two days.

this is an example of how i hate most celebrity endorsements with designers. givenchy is a respected fashion house and they're making their ad look like an invitation to a Disney Channel Stars Grown Up & Gone Wild Las Vegas New Years Eve club event.

if andrew mukamal somehow had sex with an anthropologie store and something was born because of it..it would be my ideal style in a nutshell.

we all know and love her mom carine, but julia restoin roitfeld is just as great. i (obviously) love her use of tons of black mixed with more feminine pieces. like her mom, she's the quintessential cool & smart french girl that looks like she doesn't really give a fuck what you think.

charlotte dellal

there's something about charlotte dellal that i really love. she pulls off this almost rockabilly old glamourous look, perfecting the use of leopard print (without going into cat lady or teresa giudice territory) with the greatest lip color each and every time. I wish I could figure out a lipstick color that doesn't make me look 1. dead, 2. like i just ate an ice pop or 3. crazy.

ps: yesterday was an exciting fashion day. i got to meet one of my idols in the industry (i'd name names but i'm afraid they might find this and think i'm too much of a fangirl), i saw crystal renn on the street, met another great fashion person that i literally wanted to be friends with and I discovered a great new area of brooklyn I had never been to. other exciting things have been happening too. let's say i've got some decisions to make. putting myself out there has been stressful but it's been paying off. looks like i'll be spending my summer in nyc.

whatever gets you through the night

questionnaire

"It’s Sunday, and raining very hard here in New York. We suggest spending the day reading the latest issue of Lula, guest-edited by Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy. If can’t get to the newsstand just now, at least take this questionnaire, dreamed up by the sisters years ago when Kate’s best friend Autumn “started dating a new new guy that I thought we should know more about.” In Lula, everyone from Cindy Sherman to Jason Schwartzman succumbed." - Fashionista.

Okay so I did it. Here are my answers. Read if you're totally bored:

Favorite play?

I'm not really huge into plays but the first thing that popped into my head was The Phantom Of the Opera. Not because I'm a huge broadway fan or anything but it was the first musical love in my life. I used to listen to the soundtrack all the time when I was really little.

What was your first love?

By the use of 'what', i'm assuming this question isn't pertaining to a person. I think the first thing I ever loved had to be my dolls. I treated them like they were my real babies.

Favorite language?

Definitely French. I wish I knew how to speak it. It just sounds beautiful and romantic, which is a cliche answer but I don't care.

Who is your most loved character in literature?

This question I need to work on. Nothing comes to mind. Most of the books I read are non-fiction/biographies/true crime so characters that come to mind are real people. One of my new years resolutions is to read more fiction though.

Favorite room?

My tiny living room in my Savannah apartment. A bad quality photo of it is currently the background of my blackberry so when I miss it there, I can look at it and pretend i'm layin' on my little sofa.

Favorite place to read a book?

A bench in Savannah on one of the squares or on River Street. This can be distracting because it's a great spot for people watching also.

Favorite place in NY?

I'd have to say Brooklyn because it's not as overwhelming as Manhattan sometimes is. Each section is obviously different and has different pro's and con's but on the whole, it reminds me of my family since everyone is from Brooklyn. I like walking the streets there because I like to think of everyone from my Grandparents on both sides to my parents walking around the same city when they were my age. I'd love to live there too one day.

Favorite color?

BLACK. I know, i know, it's technically not a color. I could never name just one color, that's fucking boring.

Favorite patiner/painting?

I'd have to say my favorite painters are Gustav Klimnt and Vassily Kandinsky. Both are different but they pay close attention to tiny detail which is my favorite part of any type of design. Favorite painting is up in the air, I can't choose just one.

Favorite thing to collect?

I collect way too much. I'm proud of my vintage jewelry, bag and scarf collection. Collecting old suitcases is my new obsession though. Between my room in NJ and my apartment in Savannah, I have nine vintage suitcases. I need more! I'm probably going to be on Hoarders when I'm older living in a pile of old suitcases looking like Collete Reardon (a girl can dream)

Favorite mystery?

Hm. Well, I'm kind of a morbid girl who loves to read about true crime topics like the mafia, serial killers, cults, etc. So I think my favorite mystery of life is how these crazy people are able to commit such horrible crimes. I think i've been obsessed with the mystery of a criminal's mind since I was really little, mostly out of fear. It's that idea of if the more you read about it, the more you try and understand it, it almost makes you less scared of the evils of life.

Favorite flower?

Peonies.

Favorite sea creature?

Gross. I hate most creatures especially ones in the sea. I don't even eat fish mostly because I'm disgusted with the idea of everything that lives in the sea. Welp, if that wasn't shitting on this question, I don't know what is. I guess i'll just say a seahorse because the image of a seahorse is popping into my head. Fuckin seahorses.

Favorite smell?

Oooh, i have way too many. I've gotta say the best smell is the smell of someone you love, especially when it's still on your clothing after they leave. Oh, also gasoline & new rubber tires/shoes!

If I gave you a medal right now, what would it be for?

Worrying.

Favorite texture?

"Softly" things like flannel, my black cable knit leggings and this very soft blanket that's on my couch at home.

Favorite flavor?

I'm a big taste/smell girl so this question has a million answers. I love the taste of coconut, and also SALT! and spicy. Eeesh. Too many answers. Skip.

What’s the first thing you think of when I say red?

A red sweater

Night or day?

NIGHT!

Favorite villain?

First thing that comes to mind is a slew of mafia characters like Tony Soprano, and Robert Deniro's character, Jimmy "The Gent", in Goodfellas.

Favorite silent film star?

Oh please.

Favorite artist?

I'm still sticking to my favorite painter question. But I consider musicians artists so I'm going to say John Lennon, Jeff Tweedy, Stephen Malkmus, Morrissey and Paul Westerberg too.

Molly Ringwald or Ally Sheedy?

Ally Sheedy. Absolutely.

C.S. Lewis or Freud?

I hate Freud, so I'll say C.S Lewis.

Tents or motels?

both! I haven't slept in a tent in a while but I want to go camping soon!

Favorite musical instrument?

I love all of them (although I can't play any) but I'd have to say the drums.

Thunder or lightning?

Thunder.

Tea or coffee?

Coffee. I prefer it iced, but i'll be big girl and drink it hot too.

Wine or beer?

THIS IS HARD. Depends on what mood i'm in! I prefer both wine and beer instead of hard liquor. Don't make me choose.

Lemon or lime?

Lemon!

Monday or Friday?

This survey is making me realize I'm so awful at choosing favorites. Monday rules because it's like a fresh start, and Fridays rule because it means the weekend is here. So who in their right mind has a favorite? Both represent cool, sweet and awesome thingz.

February or December?

December. February is kind of cool too but at that point, you're just over winter and cold things. In December, you're so ready for it.

Christmas or Halloween?

Halloween! Even though I didn't dress up this year. Christmas is too stressful.

Rosemary’s Baby or Hannah and Her Sisters?

Oh hale no, you are not making me choose between these two. I love them both!

J.D. Salinger or Jack Kerouac?

Salinger.

Hats or scarves?

Scarves. My head is way too big. A hat will never cooperate with that thing.

Julie Christie or Vanessa Redgrave?

Vanessa Redgrave.

Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor?

Elizabeth Taylor because I've gotta support my brunettes but I like the whole idea of Marilyn Monroe pretending to be dumb and sex kitten-y but was really so dark and fucked up behind it all.

Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart?

I don't care.

Las Vegas or Atlantic City?

Oy. I'd say Atlantic City because I could leave & get home quicker. Both are glittery nightmares!

Rain or sun?

Sun but I like rain when i can lay in bed/on the couch with nothing to do. When I've got places to go to, the rain gets in the way of everything! Especially any chance of having a cool person hair day.

Spiderman or Superman?

Oh get out of here.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs because they are like little dumb happy faces, so eager to play and be your friend. Cats reeeaalllly hate everything but it's funny.

Ice cream or sorbet?

I don't care. Okay who am I kidding, I guess ice cream.

Beatles or Rolling Stones?

I hate this question because the only similarity is that they are both British! They are completely different sounds and offer beautiful things. I love them both.

Favorite fun fair ride of all time?

Can I please say the big pirate ship things that go back and forth? YOU KNOW YOU LOVE IT ALSO!

Favorite sidekick?

My best friend Abby? Everything is funnier and cooler when I'm with her.

What are the initials of the last person you kissed?

Myspace survey, much? I'm too old to say that shit. Of course I want to but that's embarrassing right? Okay. Next.

What characteristics do you most envy in others?

Honesty! If you're pissed, be pissed, if you hate something, hate it. The worst is when someone just lies and pretends they love something/someone when they don't. I also love when people have a good sense of humor and aren't assholes. That's always good.

If you could fly, where is the first place you would go?

I've been wanting to go to Montreal for a while, so I'd fly on over there!

Have you ever won a medal or a prize–if so, what?

The first thing that comes to mind is a prize I won at basketball camp for "best stations", meaning I RULED at all of the different basketball activity stations. That was like 9 years ago. Fuck, I need to win more memorable prizes. That's awful.

What is your secret dream?

To one day be both a really good Mom/wife and career woman, but I don't think that's a secret. It's just one of those cheesy "i want to have it all" dreams.

Favorite season?

FALL! luv u.

What is your greatest love?

At 22, I'm not quite sure I have an answer for that.

Favorite currency?

American dollars....?

Favorite city?

Savannah and London.

Favorite imaginary place?

I'll have to get back to you on that.

Favorite planet?

Earth. Boring answer.

Favorite children’s book?

Goodnight Moon

Favorite candy?

Pralines. I dont think they're necessarily a candy but they're 100% sugary goodness so that feels very candy-like to me.

Favorite name [and it cannot be your own]?

I have a lot of favorite names. Can't pick one.
